Songkran – Cambodian/Lao/Thai New Year: they have a big water fight. Buddhists go to the monastery to feed the monks and clean the Buddhist shrines, and in many cities the Buddhas are paraded and people throw water on them, which is how the water fight started. Some people bring a handful of dirt to their local monastery to repay any dirt they may have walked out that past year. Cambodia has traditional games to play.


Baisakhi Festival (Sikh New Year) – celebrates the harvest of wheat crops with joyful bhangra and gidda dance.

Jefferson’s Birthday – famous for writing the Declaration of Independence (from England), stating ‘all men are created equal’.
